9 - 10 a.m. ET Beyond Compliance: Designing for How Children Actually Grow

Explore how children’s rapidly evolving bodies and minds shape their safety needs at every stage of development. Designed for manufacturers and industry leaders, this interactive session will provide key takeaways to inform safer product design, support compliance with evolving standards, and uncover opportunities to better serve children and caregivers in today’s market.

Grounded in evidence-based guidance from the pediatric medical community, the session will align key developmental milestones with product use and safety recommendations to help optimize child health and well-being. Dr. Hoffman will highlight considerations across critical product categories, including safe sleep, motor vehicle crash protection, and home safety, offering a comprehensive perspective on designing for safety across the early years.

Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Hoffman, M.D., CPST-I, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Oregon Health and Science University

10 - 10:15 a.m. ET Break
10:15 - 11 a.m. ET The ANSI Z535.4 Dilemma - When Compliance with the Standard Does Not Ensure Compliance with Your Warning

ANSI Z535.4 warnings are everywhere, and that may be precisely the problem. Their ubiquity and uniform appearance have trained to tune them out, undermining the very purpose they're designed to serve. Yet these warnings continue to carry significant weight in the courtroom and remain endorsed by the CPSC, even as evidence of their diminishing effectiveness mounts.

This session unpacks the conundrum: Why do we keep relying on a format we know consumers don't read? How do the courts treat compliance with a standard whose real-world impact is in question? Any why does CPSC continue to support its despite awareness of these limitations?

Drawing from a forthcoming chapter in the Handbook of Warnings (publishing later this year), this 30-minute presentation will be followed by 10-15 minutes of open Q&A and discussion.

Speakers:
Carol Pollack-Nelson, Ph.D., Independent Safety Consulting, LLC
Jeremy Richardson, Partner, Litigation and Intellectual Property Practices, Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP
