In 2024, Baby Safety Alliance members met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to discuss key product safety priorities. One of those priorities was updating the federal bassinet and cradle standard. The approval now moving forward reflects that effort.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has accepted ASTM F2194-25 as the new mandatory standard for bassinets and cradles. This approval brings the latest voluntary standard into 16 CFR part 1218 and updates related references in 16 CFR part 1241.
It’s a meaningful step for families and the industry. ASTM F2194-25 adds clearer performance requirements, improved structural and stability testing, and updated labeling to address known hazards in infant sleep products. These updates replace the 2013 version and reflect years of shared work to raise safety expectations.
Once the rule is published in the Federal Register, it will take effect in six months. Manufacturers will then have 12 additional months to meet the new requirements for removable bassinet beds.
“This update shows what our industry can achieve when safety is a shared priority,” said Lisa Trofe, Executive Director of the Baby Safety Alliance. “Members brought forward real concerns and real solutions. The new standard gives families confidence and gives manufacturers clearer direction for future design and testing.”
This decision highlights progress on the priorities championed throughout Hill Day 2024 and reinforces a stronger foundation for safe infant sleep.
