JPMA to Offer Free Car Seat Safety Check in D.C. for Child Passenger Safety Week

MEDIA ADVISORY Correctly used car seats and seat belts are proven interventions required in all U.S. states and territories. However, more than half of families do not use their car seats as instructed by the car seat manufacturer and vehicle manufacturer. To kick off Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 17-23, 2023), the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), its manufacturer members, and advocate partners are offering a free Car Seat Safety Check in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, September 16. Education and hands-on assistance will be provided by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. What: JPMA Car Seat Safety Check Who: Joseph M. Colella, JPMA Director of Child Passenger Safety and nationally known expert When: Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET Where: Bard High School Early College DC, 1351 Alabama Ave. SE, Washington, D.C. 20032 How: First come, first served. You do not need to register to participate. Why: Car crashes are a leading cause of injury and death for children under age 15. JPMA, its manufacturer members, and advocate partners offer Car Seat Safety Check events like these to address these alarming statistics: - Each day in the U.S., 445 children are injured and three are killed in car crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- 40 percent of children killed in crashes are not using car seats or seat belts at all.
- More than half of families do not use their car seats as instructed by the car seat manufacturer and vehicle manufacturer.
